Special Education (Minor)

Overview

The Special Education Minor is intended for Teacher Education students or alternatively certified teachers considering adding a special education certification to their credentials. The 18 credit hours are applicable towards meeting the state requirements for teacher certification in an area of special education. Candidates must also pass required certification exams, and all requirements for teacher certification programs are subject to change if new requirements are established by the Oklahoma State Board of Education, the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education or the Office of Educational Quality and Accountability (OEQA).

With a nationwide critical shortage of qualified educators, especially in special education areas, this minor can serve as a stepping stone to many teacher employment options. Additionally, teachers in special education fields are often compensated at a higher rate than other teaching professionals.
