HIST 1493 U.S.History from 1877
U.S. History from 1877 provides a thematic and chronological examination of the rich and diverse social, political, and cultural heritage that has developed in the United States from Reconstruction to the present day. Not only will we explore monumental historical events and key historical figures, but we will also examine the everyday lives of Americans individually and collectively to better understand how they attempted to negotiate their places within American society. Throughout the course, we will explore the roles of women, immigrants, and people of color. As such, we will look at the pluralistic and changing nature of American society over time, and the ideological roots that helped to facilitate these changes. Since this course is interdisciplinary, it will draw from and interact with the fields of history, political science, literature, cultural studies, and philosophy to better understand the complex and multifaceted nature of American society. And no matter what issue we’re discussing, we’ll challenge you to relate it to the America of today.
